There are no SF animations, SF movies, or fantasy movies made in our country, right?
I went to the theater to watch a movie after a long time.
But I was curious about one thing.
Why are there no SF animations, SF movies, or fantasy movies made in our country?
Why are there no serious SF movies like Batman, Superman, or Spiderman in Korean movies, except for children's comics like Thunderbird?
We import all of those Japanese animations and countless American SF movies. However, our country, which prides itself on being a movie powerhouse, does not make such movies. The animations that we do make are pure lyrical literature that appears in textbooks. A few years ago, there was a Korean native animation called Fox Rain. How many Koreans watched it? No, how many people know that such a boring animation was made?
There are no SF movies except for "The Host." There are no Korean SF movies that have been hit recently. Why is that?
I think there are two reasons.
First, there is no technology.
Korea cannot catch up with the fancy CG and special effects used in American SF movies. There is no money, and there is no professional manpower or accumulated technology. The production technology of the famous "Yonggary" was borrowed from the United States, but it is still impossible to do it with only domestic Korean technology.
Second, Korea is a society
of the elderly. Even in the 21st century, the so-called old judges of the literary world, who are steeped in Confucianism, only talk about literary quality and artistry when judging literary awards. The producers only talk about money, and the field of SF is still considered the domain of children and teenagers. They say that literature should always be about reflection on life and intense contemplation on life. And yet, they envy The Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter and lament, "We still have a long way to go."
But is that really true?
Are SF and fantasy still in the domain of teenagers?
No.
70% of the population in their teens, 20s, 30s, and 40s already prefer fantasy and SF. Then, shouldn’t the judging criteria in various evaluations be not artistic quality and literary quality, but popularity, expertise, and the level of imagination of SF and fantasy?
The current 40-somethings are the generation that was in the midst of the computer boom. They still live with the SF stories they told in college. They live while playing online games or watching Japanese animation and American SF movies. The literary quality and artistic quality that are the judging criteria for Korean movies are no longer of interest to them. Of course, it goes without saying that teenagers, 20s, and 30s are even more so.
I hope that Korean movies will seriously include SF and fantasy animation. Korean movies should also seriously make movies like Superman, Batman, and Spiderman. I hope that Korean movies shown in theaters will no longer be at the level of TV literary theaters, and I earnestly hope that they will not be at the level of melodramas or soap operas.
Even if you win an art award at Cannes, if there are not many people who watch the movie, it is meaningless. That is why the audience is included in the three elements of a play.
Rather than just leaning on the hem of an actress's skirt and thinking about getting a prize, I sincerely hope that you create a high-quality fantasy and science fiction that can truly resonate with 50 million viewers.
